Oasis Eats Review: The Smashed Pig Gastropub

After a long day at the office, it was finally Friday night. We packed up our things and headed straight to Downtown Las Vegas where nearby the classic hotels on Fremont Street, a new restaurant had recently opened: The Smashed Pig Gastropub. Time for some grub.
DSC00366Inside, we were greeted promptly and kindly by a hostess. I told her about our reservation for 10, and she rushed off to make our group table ready. We looked to the bar, where the gentleman asked if we’d been helped and if we’d like to order a drink while we wait.
In no time, we are seated with drinks on the way. As I sip my “Tow Rag” drink (a sort of gin lemonade as described by our server), I pore over the Smashed Pig menu for what to consume. I make note of all the promising options. Their menu goes in the order of “Beginnings,” “Middles” and “Endings.”

The Beginnings, of course, are appetizers, and they sounded fantastic. Fresh oysters on the half shell, fresh sashimi, lamb tacos and “Crispy Devilled Eggs.” Someone ordered the eggs and I snagged one. It was heavenly. The boiled white egg half was breaded and fried, and topped with creamy yolk and cornichon pickles. It’s creamy, crispy and warm. A must have.

We order entrees, aka “Middles,” and the majority of us call for the Smashed Pig Burger, which comes with sea salt garlic fries and is served on a wooden cutting board. My coworker ordered the Fish and Chips, with fish pieces so large it looked like they just deep fried the whole trout. The burger was exceptional. Cooked perfectly to order, it was your classic cheeseburger, a comfort food for any American. I basically hoarded my fries, refusing to share with anyone because they were so good. Thick cut, crunchy crispy shells housed creamy hot potato inside. Though I was full with just half the burger, I made sure to finish and savor the fries while they remained fresh.DSC00392My New Year’s resolution of eating healthier got in the way of trying their Sticky Toffee Pudding (serious willpower was needed to not order this), and I also pined for their Lemon Pudding Cake. We sat contentedly, enjoying their vast beer selection, chatting and being checked on frequently by our server for drinks and other needs. She graciously divided up the bill. In the end, I thanked her for her wonderful service to us.DSC00375

If you’re looking for a place to eat that’s mere yards away from a hotel near the Fremont Street Experience, look no further for English Style comfort foods like bangers and mash, fish and chips and Yorkshire puddings. I’lladmit, the drinks and food were a little pricey ($12 for a signature drink), so I only bought one libation and didn’t order my own devilled eggs, even though I wanted to. However, the atmosphere and decor is beautiful. If you plan on crashing at a hotel near Fremont Street for the weekend or just for the evening, it’s a great place to start your evening before a pub crawl or some gambling.
