So you’ve decided to take a mini-vacation to Las Vegas for 3 or 4 days, but you don’t want to hassle with the crowds on The Strip or other “tourist traps”? If you consider visiting the following attractions while staying in the downtown area, you’ll have a greater appreciation of the “old school” Las Vegas that is difficult to achieve when staying on The Strip.
The Arts District
Thanks to the remarkable talents of numerous creative Vegas locals, the historic Arts District is an eclectic yet vivid venue. Commonly referred to as “18b”, the Arts District straddles West Charleston and is the home to numerous art galleries, bars, boutiques, restaurants, stores, studios, and other venues. Tens of thousands of visitors attend the monthly first Friday events held here. It is a popular hotspot with locals and tourists alike.
The Cultural Corridor
Known widely for its museums, the Cultural Corridor is a work in progress. It’s known primarily for the Neon Museum where visitors can see the “Boneyard”, the home of over 200 of Las Vegas’ most iconic signage dating back to the 1930’s. Nearby, you’ll find the Natural History Museum with its interactive dioramas and exhibits as well as the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, now a dilapidated adobe fort that was originally built in 1855.
Downtown Container Park
This family-friendly outdoor dining, entertainment, and shopping venue is constructed entirely from shipping containers stacked one on top of the other. Here you’ll find a wide variety of food outlets and quaint boutique shops as well as a children’s play area that features a 30’ slide and small water park. Best of all, it’s located only a few blocks from the Fremont Street Experience.
Fremont East Entertainment District
Las Vegas created the Freemont East Entertainment District known as FEED in 2002. It is located within the 6 block downtown area bordered by Las Vegas Blvd., 8th Street, Ogden Street, and Carson. This is a pedestrian-friendly area that is a blend of bars and cocktail lounges, eateries, a historic gambling house, lively entertainment, local area businesses, retail shops, and a diverse street life.
Symphony Park
Symphony Park is situated on 61-acres in downtown Las Vegas and is home to the arts, culture, medicine, and science. The area has provided the city with an opportunity to develop restaurants and retail shops as well as other mixed-use development efforts. The primary anchors are Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
